Early 19th Century Carved Wooden Relic / Shrine Cabinet with 4 Oil on Porcelain Portraits by Jean Auguste Édouard Liénard
Beautiful & impressive early 19th century renaissance revival wooden shrine cabinet featuring 4 oil on porcelain portraits by Jean Auguste Édouard Liénard (French 1779-1848), modelled with carved finials, central head & side figures, and pilasters. The hinged doors are decorated with lions heads, which open to reveal four lovely oval portraits of the Italian poets 'Dante', 'Ariosto', 'Tasso' and 'Petrarch', in classical attire, all signed 'J. Liénard'.
Has a hook at the back. Can be wall hung or displayed on a shelf leaning against the wall.
Very good condition for period. Portraits in excellent condition. Cabinet front in good condition. Carvings in very good condition. Crack in wood at back of cabinet, that shows in small front crack in wood between portraits as shown in photos.
Provenance: portraits verified by the V&A and National Museum.
Cabinet Height 64 cm. Height of each portrait: 13cm.
